Helping Hand Club

Helping Hand Club, 2020

Our Mission: To assist, uplift, and support advocacy for a multigenerational segment of the neediest, sick, and aged and to preserve the history and legacy of Americans of African descent.

Deacon Billy Gay, Rev. Graylan Hagler, Dr. Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham, Sheila Beale and Pastor Roberts at Helping Hand Day 2020

In order to fulfill our mission, we sponsor a Black History program, a Mother’s Day booklet, Christmas food baskets, and Christmas fruit baskets. On Helping Hand Club Sunday, held annually in February, we encourage support for major civil rights organizations such as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.

The Helping Hand Club was established in 1907 by our first president, Mrs. Mary E. Cabaniss.  Mrs. Cabaniss saw a need to provide interesting Christian activities for our new members. She served as our president for 32 years. Our motto is, “It is more blessed to give than receive.” (Acts 20:35.) Our current president is Sister Sheila Beale.

You may contact any member of the club by sending an email to HelpingHandClub@19thStreetbc.org or by calling the church office at 202-829-2773. Come join us and spread sunshine.
