Booker Memorial Committee

Sunday School Class #10 established the Booker Memorial Committee in 1986 to keep alive the memory of its beloved church school teacher, Sister Etta Lyles Booker. Mrs. Booker (1889-1986) was a gentle, gracious woman and a model for Christian commitment. She was a Sunday school teacher and trainer, deaconess, ministry leader, and mentor. The Etta L. Booker Educational Wing of our church is a memorial commemorating her untiring stewardship in the church school.

The Booker Memorial Committee’s mission is to exemplify Christian living by thoughts, words, and deeds directed by the Holy Spirit to win souls for Christ and to inspire others to Christian service through prayer, effort, and perseverance.

Accomplishments and activities in recent years include:

  • Presenting the Perfect Attendance Award to church school students
  • Supporting the church school’s Thanksgiving food baskets project
  • Donating to ministries’ anniversaries
  • Collaborating with the Trustee Board on the Prayer Garden

The committee also has developed an affinity for our seniors because they have led us and taught us. We remembered that Ms. Nannie Helen Burroughs grew up in this church (from the age of five, and remained a member until her death in 1961). She and Mrs. Booker were in service at the same time. Both were great educators, and we assume they knew each other and might have had a conversation along the way. We imagined that connection and produced a play titled “A Conversation between Nannie Helen Burroughs and Etta L. Booker.”

Please join our committee as we work to maintain the education wing and to support other ministries. Peace and blessings to everyone.
